Manta Ray

 This is the "Manta Ray" Kinetic Sculpture by Greg Stirling - a scale model inspired by the grace and beauty of the original Manta Ray. The Manta Ray grows to a wingspan of 23 feet and consumes small fish and plankton. It also has the largest brain of any fish in the sea. This unit has fifty-four ribs which emulate the soothing motion of the Manta Ray flying through water. The Manta Ray can be presented on a desktop or wall mounted using mounting holes in the base. The drive includes an off-the-shelf DC gearmotor, ball bearings, brass spur gears and dual camshafts. It Includes a wall jack and adjustable speed control. Unit is very quiet at low speed. Materials are: HDPE, polished brass, stainless steel, aluminum, and black walnut. Completed February 2023. Wingspan is 38" x 24" long and 13" tall. Weight is 30 pounds. Revolution

 Revolution was a commission for 'Ripley's Believe It Or Not' museum. Ripley's supplied the concept and the Face media. Revolution was built from roller chain and over 72 sprockets. The chain is driven by two stepper motors. 72"H x 72"W x 24"D. Materials are steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, 110vac receptacle and cord. Completed September 2021.

 
 

Spiromania

This is the third in a series of kinetic sculptures inspired by circular motion.   Its surreal nature and mesmerizing spiral motion produces a calming and hypnotic effect.  This sculpture can run at slower speeds if desired.  17"H x 28"W x 19"D.  Materials are  aluminum, steel, and black walnut burlwood.  Completed March 2017.   

 

Jellyfish

This is the first in a series of kinetic sculptures built around circular motion. Its irregular motion resembles the movements of a sea creature and is so named Jellyfish. 41"H x 36"W x 18"D.  Materials are stainless steel, aluminum, and black walnut. Completed June 2016.



 
 

Wormhole

This is the second in a series of kinetic sculptures based on the circular movement.  Its irregular motion resembles the movements of a worm and is so named Wormhole.  43"H x 38"W x 19"D.  Materials are stainless steel, aluminum, and black walnut.  Completed November 2016.

 
 

 
 

Bird Of Prey

This piece is known as Bird Of Prey, it imitates the motion of the same.  It is also a metaphor for military might, fueled by necessity and overwhelmed buy its own complexity.   It took over 20 different setups to arrive at this configuration. Seagull

Cecropia Moth

Greg was fascinated by insects during his youth.  In the fall he would collect caterpillars, feed them maple leaves and in the spring  -out would come a newborn Cecropia Moth.  Stirling uses turn-of-the-century technology and is inspired by his love of nature.
